AMPLIFIED BODY
SPRING 2022 PROFESSOR ALEKSANDRA AZBEL
Architecture & the Body
This project focused on the connection between the human body and the architecture surrounding it. Initially I was tasked with documenting a familiar space and an activity that takes place in the space through a series of drawings. I opted to depict myself working on art in my art room, specifically working on a painting on the floor. In the top left drawing my goal was to depict the sense of focus and connection that I have with the piece of art while sitting on the ground working on the piece. The drawing directly below shows a comic strip of the process when the creation of the piece of art. In the top right drawing I created a plan drawing showing the movement of the architecture and furniture in the space and using stipple to show the circulation going on during the creation of an art piece, with the density of the stipple showing the time spent on that location . Lastly the bottom right drawing is a one point perspective of the artist working on a piece of art in the art room.
Child Like Connection
At the beginning of this project my partner and I simply taped markers to our fingers and drew on a piece of paper pinned up on the wall. Through these explorations we found that the drawing reminded us of how it felt to draw as a child. It disabled the control that we now have that often limits us when creating abstract drawings.
The glove portion was made of a spandex material, allowing it to be worn by multiple people with varying hand sizes. We used brass tubing for the skeletal portions and threaded a piece of bungee through starting at the wrist and continuing all the way up to the tip of the extension where it finally tied the clip to the end of each extension. Through experimenting with different mediums we discovered that it was quite difficult to attach and detach the medium each time we wanted to change it. To improve this function,we opted to use a clip. We found clips made of the same material as the pipe we were already using to create a cohesive look. We cut slits in the glove’s fabric and slid the pipe through them to affix the pipe to the glove itself.
