MULTIGENERATIONAL HOUSING
SPRING 2022 PROFESSOR NOLE CLARKE
In researching the demographics of the French Quarter of New Orleans, I discovered that the area's restaurant and hotel industries are extremely prevalent. My project will create housing for all who work in those industries. The multigenerational aspect of the project will take the form of larger units that allow those traveling to the country for work to move with their families. Commonly, these workers will leave their children and with an older relative in their home country while they work in the U.S. My project will create a space where they can travel with their whole family while they are here for work.
Along with family housing, the project will feature several single and double units for a variety of different groupings of occupants. Along with housing units, the project will create a community space for the older community members to care for the younger generations in a space larger than the apartment units. This space will also allow restaurant and bar workers to share a meal or enjoy quiet time after their hectic shifts or on their day off. Privacy from the adjacencies will be crucial to the design of the space, given the sites proximity to Bourbon Street and other popular tourist attractions.
